Why Bed Bugs Leave Shells at All
An insect wears its skeleton on the outside, and a rigid outer case cannot stretch. To get bigger, a bed bug has to climb out of the one it is wearing and harden a new, larger one underneath. The discarded case is the shell you found: complete down to the legs and antennae, but empty, because everything that was alive walked out of it.
The detail that turns this from trivia into evidence is the trigger. A bed bug passes through five nymphal stages on the way to adulthood, and each of those stages requires a blood meal before the moult can proceed — a point the University of Tennessee bed bug program states plainly in its biology summary. No blood, no moult. So every husk in your mattress seam is not just a sign that a bed bug was present; it is physical proof that a bed bug fed on a person in that bed and then grew.
That single fact does most of the diagnostic work on this page. Because each moult produces a larger husk than the last, the size spread in a seam is a readable record. First-stage skins are roughly a millimetre and a half — near the limit of what an unaided eye resolves — and the last nymphal skin approaches the size of an adult bed bug, about four and a half millimetres, the familiar apple-seed comparison.
- Only large husks. Late-stage bugs were present. Common where a small number of adults or near-adults arrived and fed, and worth confirming before you conclude anything about scale.

- Husks in more than one room. Treat the whole floor as involved. Bed bugs spread along the routes people take — a couch someone naps on, a second bedroom, a favourite chair — not randomly.
What the sizes cannot tell you is when. Chitin is inert and dry; an undisturbed husk in a box spring corner survives long after the population that produced it is gone. Old Evidence or a Live Problem? The Two-Week Test
There is no way to date a shell by looking at it, so stop trying and run a clean test instead. It costs almost nothing and it settles the question properly:
- Reset the surface. Vacuum every husk, egg and dark spot out of the seams, frame joints and baseboard with a sealed-HEPA machine, then empty the canister or bag into a sealed bag outside immediately. You are erasing the historical record on purpose.
- Encase the mattress and box spring. A white, smooth encasement is the cleanest possible detection surface. Anything new shows up on it.
- Set interceptors under every leg of the bed and any sofa or chair someone sleeps in, and keep bedding, throws and skirts from touching the floor — a hanging duvet is a bridge that bypasses the trap entirely.
- Keep sleeping there. This is the step people get wrong. Bed bugs move toward a sleeping host; an empty bed produces empty traps and a false all-clear. Moving to the couch does not protect you — it invites the population to follow you into a second room.
- Look again at two weeks. New husks, new spotting on the encasement, or anything in a cup means active. Nothing at all, with someone sleeping in that bed the whole time, points at historical evidence.

The Carpet Beetle Problem — Why Half of These Finds Are the Wrong Insect
Carpet beetles are the most common false positive in this entire category, and it is easy to see why: their larvae also shed skins repeatedly, they also leave those skins along baseboards and under beds, and the husks are also small, brown and insect-shaped. People find them while searching for bed bugs, and confirmation bias does the rest.
One feature separates them cleanly. Carpet beetle larval skins are hairy. They are bristly and banded, tapered like a minute caterpillar, frequently with a tuft of longer hairs at the rear. A bed bug shell has no hairs at all: it is smooth, broadly oval, and flat. Under a magnifier at any decent light angle the difference is not subtle.
Location helps too. Bed bug casings concentrate within reach of where a person sleeps, because that is where the bugs harbour. Carpet beetle skins turn up in wool rugs, closets, stored blankets, under furniture that never moves, and around light fixtures and window sills where the adult beetles die. Where the Shells Are Pointing
Moulting happens in the harbourage, not out in the open, which makes a concentration of husks a direction sign rather than just a finding. Follow it. In order of how often they hold the population:
- Mattress piping, seams and the tag area — drag a thin card along the piping and see what comes out.
- Box spring corners and the fabric dust cover underneath — the single most productive spot in most homes, and the one people skip because it means standing the box spring on end.
- Bed frame joints, bolt holes and slat ends, especially wooden frames.
- The back and mounting of the headboard, particularly a wall-mounted one.
- Nightstand drawer runners and the underside of the drawer bottom.
- The baseboard and carpet edge nearest the bed, plus any lifted carpet tack strip.
Husks lying loose on open floor in the middle of a room have almost always been moved there — by a vacuum, a sheet change, or a foot. Do not read them as a harbourage.
The First 48 Hours: What to Do, and Three Things Never to Do
Do: encase the mattress and box spring; set interceptors; run all bedding and any clothing from the room through a hot wash and, more importantly, a hot dryer cycle, since dryer heat is the reliable killer rather than the wash; bag laundry in sealed bags for transport so you are not seeding the hallway or the car; pull the bed away from the wall and keep the bedding off the floor; and photograph everything you find with something for scale, because dated photographs matter enormously if you are a tenant.
Never:
- Throw out the mattress. It is the most expensive wrong move available, it treats none of the frame, headboard or baseboard population, and a new mattress in an untreated room is reinfested within days. Encase instead.
- Move to the couch or a spare room. Bed bugs follow the host. Sleeping elsewhere converts a one-room problem into a two-room problem, and it also blinds your interceptors.
- Set off a total-release fogger. Foggers deposit residue on open surfaces where bed bugs are not, drive survivors deeper into wall voids and adjoining units, and leave the seams and joints where the population lives entirely untouched.
What Canada Legally Sells — and What the Forums Will Tell You to Import
Any product sold in Canada to kill an insect is a pest control product and carries a PCP registration number on its Canadian label, issued by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency. Run a two-week evidence test instead of guessing. Clean the area thoroughly with a sealed-HEPA vacuum so every existing husk and spot is gone, encase the mattress and box spring, set interceptors under every bed and sofa leg, and then leave it alone and look again after two weeks. New fecal spotting on a clean encasement, new husks, or anything caught in a cup is an active population.
