Start With the Bed Bug Itself: Five Features That Settle It
Almost every bad identification comes from matching on colour. Reddish-brown describes a bed bug, a spider beetle, a larder beetle, a flea, a tick and half the beetles that wander into a Canadian house in July. Colour is the least useful feature available. These five are the ones that actually decide.
- Flat, not domed. An unfed adult bed bug is compressed top to bottom — the classic description is an apple seed, and the point of the comparison is the flatness, not the colour. Beetles are three-dimensional: rounded backs, a hard shell, and a visible seam running down the middle where the two wing covers meet. If you can see that seam, you are holding a beetle.
- Six legs, no eight. Insects have six legs and antennae; ticks and mites have eight legs and no antennae. This one test eliminates two entire categories of look-alike instantly, and it is the same test we use on the tick side of the site in bugs that look like ticks.
- No hair. Bed bugs have microscopic setae, but to your eye and to a phone camera they are smooth at every life stage. If the thing is visibly bristly, fuzzy, or carries a tuft of longer hairs at one end, it is a carpet beetle or larder beetle larva.
- Short, blunt antennae. A bed bug’s antennae are stubby, four-segmented and roughly as long as its head. Cockroach nymphs, by contrast, wave long whip-like antennae that can exceed their own body length — visible without magnification and completely decisive.
- It cannot jump and it cannot fly. Adult bed bugs have vestigial wing pads and no functional wings. If the specimen flew to your windowsill it is a beetle; if it sprang off your hand it is a flea. Bed bugs walk, at a fairly unhurried pace.
Life stage complicates all of this, which is why nymphs cause so much confusion. A bed bug moults five times before adulthood, and a first-stage nymph is roughly 1–1.5 mm and nearly transparent until it feeds, at which point it turns bright red. That translucent stage is what gets reported as booklice, and the fed stage is what gets reported as a “tiny red mite”.

Carpet Beetles: The Classic Bed Bug Look-Alike
If you take one thing from this page, take this: carpet beetles and their larvae are commonly mistaken for bed bugs, and the two problems have almost nothing in common — different insect, different room, different fix, and nothing in the bed bug aisle applies to either the adult or the larva.
Adult carpet beetles are small domed ovals with a mottled shell — the varied carpet beetle looks like a speckled mosaic of white, brown and yellowish scales, and the black carpet beetle is a plain dark oval. They fly, they are drawn to light, and in spring they are commonly found dead on windowsills or crawling on a sunny window frame. Adults outdoors feed on pollen and nectar, which is how they arrive: through an open window, on cut flowers, or through a gap around a window frame.
The damage is done by the larvae, and the larvae are what really confuse people. They are elongated rather than oval, tan to dark brown, and unmistakably bristly, with the varied carpet beetle larva carrying a tuft of longer hairs at the rear. They eat keratin and other animal-derived material: wool, silk, felt, feathers, leather, hair, dead insects, and the lint that accumulates under a radiator or along a carpet edge. That diet is why they live in closets, under furniture that never moves, along the tack strip at the edge of a wool rug, and in the wall void around a dead mouse or an abandoned birds’ nest.
The shed-skin trap. Carpet beetle larvae moult repeatedly and leave behind hollow bristly skins, and a person who has just read that “bed bugs leave shed skins” will find these and reasonably conclude the worst. The difference is visible with the magnifier: a bed bug casing is a smooth, translucent amber shell in the shape of the insect; a carpet beetle larval skin is brown and covered in bristles.
Why it matters commercially. Bed bug treatment is one of the most expensive things a homeowner can buy, and none of it works on carpet beetles. The carpet beetle fix is vacuuming with attention to edges and under furniture, laundering or dry-cleaning affected textiles, storing wool and off-season clothing in sealed containers, and hunting down the larval food source. Traps help you find the room; they are not the cure.
Bat Bugs: The One That Fools Professionals Too
Bat bugs sit in the same genus as bed bugs and are, for practical purposes, visually identical without magnification. The published distinction is the length of the fringe hairs along the margin of the pronotum — the shield behind the head — and calling it reliably takes a microscope and someone who has done it before. Nobody should be attempting that from a phone photograph.
What you can assess is the pattern. Bat bugs feed on bats, so they occur where bats roost: attics, chimneys, soffits, and wall voids in older houses and farm buildings. When the bats leave or are excluded, the bugs disperse downward into living space looking for a host, which is why sightings cluster around ceilings, light fixtures, and upper walls rather than around the bed. A bed bug population, by contrast, concentrates within a few feet of where a person sleeps.
Getting this wrong is expensive in a specific way: you can treat the bedroom perfectly and keep getting bugs, because the source is a roost you have not touched. And the roost is not a DIY job in Ontario. Several bat species here are protected, and exclusion is timing-sensitive because flightless young are present in the roost through the summer — sealing a roost at the wrong time traps them inside. If the pattern above matches your house, get the specimen identified and speak to a licensed wildlife professional before anyone sprays anything.
Booklice: The “Baby Bed Bugs” That Are a Humidity Reading
Booklice, or psocids, are 1–2 mm, pale, soft-bodied and fast-moving, and they show up in numbers that alarm people: dozens on a basement wall, a scatter across a windowsill in a bathroom, a dusting inside a cardboard box of stored paper. Because “tiny and pale” matches the description of a first-stage bed bug nymph, they generate a lot of false alarms.
They are not parasites and they do not bite. They graze microscopic surface mould and mildew, which is why they appear exactly where dampness is: fresh drywall and new construction that has not dried out, window frames with winter condensation, damp basements, and stored cardboard. They are, in effect, a humidity gauge that walks.
The response is a dehumidifier and better ventilation rather than an insecticide, and the population collapses on its own once the surface mould they eat has nothing to grow on. Spider Beetles, Larder Beetles and the Rest of the Beetle Problem
Spider beetles get mistaken for engorged bed bugs constantly. They are small, glossy and humped, with long legs held in a way that suggests a spider, and in the reddish-brown ones the shiny bulbous abdomen reads exactly like a bed bug that has just fed. They are scavengers of dried organic material and are common in older Ontario buildings: attics, pantries, wall voids with old rodent or bird nests, and the dusty corners of storage rooms. Two tests settle it — a spider beetle is shiny and rounded where a bed bug is matte and flat, and it is found around old food debris rather than in a bed.
Larder beetles are larger, dark, and carry a pale band across the wing covers with a few dark spots in it, which is distinctive once you know to look for it. Their larvae are hairy and, like carpet beetle larvae, are often found near a dead animal in a wall void or a forgotten bag of pet food. They are also fond of chewing into wood or insulation to pupate, which is what turns them from a nuisance into a repair.
Drugstore and cigarette beetles are small, rounded, uniformly brown pantry beetles that fly to windows in numbers. If small brown ovals keep appearing near your kitchen window in summer, the search should be a pantry inventory rather than a mattress inspection: check flour, cereal, spices, dried pet food and birdseed, and discard anything with fine powder or webbing in it.
Cockroach Nymphs, Fleas, Ticks and Clover Mites
Young cockroaches are dark, oval, wingless and small, and they get mistaken for bed bugs regularly — but their antennae are enormously long, they run rather than trundle, and German cockroach nymphs carry two dark stripes down the pale shield behind the head. Location helps too: cockroaches are a kitchen and bathroom problem, drawn to food, water and warmth around appliances. Fleas are the classic “something is biting me at night” alternative, and the physical test is clean: fleas are flattened side to side, like a coin standing on edge, where bed bugs are flattened top to bottom. Fleas also jump — a distance that startles you — and bed bugs cannot. Ankle-level bites plus a pet in the house shifts the odds heavily toward fleas.
Ticks have eight legs and no antennae, which is the whole answer, and they attach and stay attached rather than wandering. Clover mites are the tiny bright-red specks that appear in spring and fall on sunny window frames and leave a red smear when wiped. They are plant feeders, they do not bite, and they are covered alongside the other red-speck confusions in red “ticks” and clover mites.
When You Cannot Find the Insect: What Real Evidence Looks Like
Plenty of people arrive at this page with bites and no specimen. That is a much weaker starting position than it feels like, because bite reactions are genuinely unreliable evidence — some people develop obvious welts, some develop nothing at all, and the delay between the bite and the reaction can be days. Dry winter skin, contact dermatitis from a detergent or a new mattress protector, hives, and ordinary indoor mosquitoes all produce marks that look convincing at 2 a.m.
So look for the insect’s traces instead. In order of usefulness:
- Fecal spotting. Small dark marks on fabric that look like a fine felt-tip pen touched the surface and bled very slightly into the weave. They concentrate in mattress seams and piping, along the edges of a box spring, and in the joints of a bed frame. Spotting in a seam is close to conclusive on its own.
- Shed skins. Hollow, translucent, amber-coloured copies of the insect, in five ascending sizes. Smooth and shiny, never bristly — that is what separates them from carpet beetle larval skins.
- Eggs. About a millimetre, pearly white, cemented into cracks. Realistically you need the magnifier and good light to find them.
- Live insects. The gold standard, and the hardest to get in a light infestation, which is exactly what interceptors are for.

What Not to Buy Until the Identification Is Settled
We publish affiliate research and we will still tell you to close the tab on most of the bed bug aisle until you know what you have. Every item below is the correct purchase for confirmed bed bugs and a waste for eight of the nine look-alikes:
- Mattress encasements. Genuinely valuable once bed bugs are confirmed — they trap what is inside the mattress and make future inspection trivial. Entirely pointless against carpet beetles, booklice, or a bat roost.
- Steamers and heaters. The most effective DIY tools that exist for confirmed bed bugs, and among the most expensive. Do not buy one on a suspicion.
- Total-release foggers. Wrong for bed bugs anyway — they push insects deeper into voids rather than reaching them — and wrong for everything else on this list too.
- Ultrasonic plug-in repellers. No credible evidence for any household pest. We took this apart in our ultrasonic repeller review.
- Unregistered pesticides shipped from the US. Pesticides sold or used in Canada must carry a PCP registration number on the Canadian label. A marketplace listing shipping an American formulation north is an unregistered pesticide here, with no Canadian label directions to follow.
- Diatomaceous earth, bought early. It has a real role in a confirmed bed bug plan, but laying dust through a bedroom before you know what you are treating adds a cleanup job to a diagnosis you have not made.
Spend on evidence first. Interceptors and a decent light cost a small fraction of any of the above and are the only two items that pay off no matter which way the answer goes.
When to Stop Guessing and Get Help
Three situations justify picking up the phone rather than buying anything else. First, a specimen you cannot name. Tape it flat to a white index card, note the date and the exact location, and take it to a licensed pest control company, your local public health unit, or a university extension diagnostic service — identification is usually quick and it is the cheapest step in the entire process. Second, a confirmed positive in a rental or a condo. Notify the landlord or property manager in writing; in a building with shared walls and shared voids, treating one unit while the neighbours are untreated is how a problem becomes permanent, and in most Canadian jurisdictions the responsibility for treatment in a rental is not the tenant’s alone. Third, a pattern that points at a roost or a void — identical insects appearing at ceiling level, or a persistent beetle problem that traces back to a dead animal in a wall — where the fix is structural and the bug is a symptom.

An adult carpet beetle is a hard-shelled beetle: rounded and domed rather than flat, usually smaller, with a mottled or patterned shell split by a visible seam where the wing covers meet, and it flies. Carpet beetle larvae confuse people more than the adults do: they are elongated, tan to brown, obviously bristly or hairy, often with a tuft of longer hairs at one end, and they are found in closets, under baseboards, in wool rugs and stored clothing rather than in mattress seams.
Are baby bed bugs the same as booklice?+
No, and this is one of the most common false alarms. A first-stage bed bug nymph is roughly 1–1.5 mm, translucent straw-yellow before it feeds and bright red immediately after, with the same flat oval outline as the adult. Booklice (psocids) are similar in size and also pale, but they are softer, more elongated, have a distinctly bulbous head with long slender antennae, and they move quickly in a scuttling way rather than the slow trundle of a bed bug. The decisive clue is location: booklice appear on damp drywall, around windows with condensation, on stored paper and cardboard, and in new construction that has not dried out. They eat mould, not blood.
What is a bat bug, and how is it different from a bed bug?+
Bat bugs are close relatives in the same genus (Cimex) that feed on bats, and to the naked eye they are effectively identical to bed bugs — same size, same flat oval shape, same colour. The formal difference is the length of the fringe hairs along the edge of the pronotum, the shield behind the head, and it genuinely takes magnification and experience to call. What matters practically is the pattern rather than the insect: bat bugs turn up in homes with a bat roost in the attic or a wall void, they appear on upper floors and around ceiling fixtures rather than concentrated in the bed, and treating them like bed bugs fails because the source is the roost. If you find identical-looking insects near a ceiling in an older house with attic access, get the specimen professionally identified before spending anything.
What is a spider beetle, and why does it look like a bed bug?+
Spider beetles are small stored-product beetles with a shiny, humped, almost globular abdomen and long legs, which gives them a spider-like outline — and to somebody who has just been told to look for a reddish-brown oval insect, a shiny reddish-brown blob reads as a blood-fed bed bug. They are common in older buildings, attics, and pantries across Ontario, where they feed on dried plant and animal material: spilled grain, birds’ nests, dead insects, old wallpaper paste. Two features settle it. A spider beetle is glossy and three-dimensional; a bed bug is matte and flat. And a spider beetle is found where old food debris is, not in a mattress seam.
Can I identify a bed bug from a photo on my phone?+
Sometimes for an adult, rarely for a nymph. Adults are large enough that a steady close-up on a plain white background often shows the flat oval body, the short blunt antennae, and the lack of hard wing covers. Nymphs at 1–2 mm defeat almost every phone camera, and a squashed specimen loses the shape that identification depends on. The reliable move is free: tape the insect flat to a white index card with clear tape, write the date and exactly where you found it, and take it to a licensed pest control company, a public health unit, or a university extension diagnostic service. A physical specimen removes the guesswork that a blurry photo guarantees.
If it is not a bed bug, what is biting me at night?+
Often nothing is. Bites are the least reliable evidence in this entire subject: reactions vary enormously between people, appear hours or days after the fact, and a great many itchy overnight welts turn out to be dry winter skin, eczema, contact dermatitis from a detergent or a new mattress protector, hives, or fleas brought in by a pet. Mosquitoes indoors leave a similar-looking welt and are far more common in an Ontario summer than bed bugs are. This is why every credible bed bug workflow tells you to look for the insect and its droppings rather than to diagnose from your skin: a set of interceptors under the bed legs costs a small fraction of a treatment you may not need, and it answers the question either way.
What does actual bed bug evidence look like?+
Four things, in descending order of usefulness. Live insects — anywhere along mattress piping, the seams of a box spring, the underside of the bed frame, and the head of the bed. Fecal spotting — small dark marks that look like a fine felt-tip pen dotted on fabric and bled slightly into the weave, concentrated in seams and in the folds where the frame meets the mattress. Shed skins — hollow, translucent, amber-coloured copies of the insect, since a bed bug moults five times on its way to adulthood. And eggs — about 1 mm, pearly white, cemented into cracks and hard to see without magnification. If you have fecal spotting along a mattress seam you have your answer without ever catching a specimen.
Do I need to buy anything before I know what it is?+
Almost nothing, and this is where most money gets wasted. Do not buy sprays, a fogger, a mattress encasement, or a steamer to treat an insect you have not identified — every one of those is the correct purchase for confirmed bed bugs and the wrong purchase for carpet beetles, booklice, or bat bugs. The two items worth owning before a diagnosis are cheap: a set of interceptor cups that sit under the bed legs and catch anything climbing up or down, and a bright flashlight with a magnifier so you can actually see a 2 mm insect in a seam. Both are useful whatever the answer turns out to be, and both cost a fraction of the treatment you might not need.
How long should I run interceptors before I trust a negative result?+
Give it at least two weeks, and preferably a month, with the bed isolated. Interceptors only catch insects moving between the floor and the bed, so they work best when the bed is not touching the wall, the bedding is not draping onto the floor, and nothing is stored underneath — otherwise there is a bridge that bypasses the cups entirely. Bed bugs also do not feed nightly; an adult can go long stretches between meals, and a very light early infestation can genuinely produce nothing in the first week. A clean month of interceptors on an isolated bed, combined with no fecal spotting along the mattress seams, is a reasonable basis for looking elsewhere for the cause.
Are bed bugs a sign of a dirty home?+
No. Bed bugs are transported, not generated — they arrive in luggage, on used furniture, in a moving truck, or through a shared wall in a multi-unit building, and they feed on people rather than on crumbs. Immaculate homes get them; hotels with excellent housekeeping get them. Clutter matters only in that it gives them more places to hide and makes inspection and treatment harder, which is a practical problem rather than a moral one. The look-alikes on this page are a different story: booklice genuinely do indicate a moisture problem, and carpet beetles are fed by accumulated lint, hair, and wool, so if the answer turns out to be one of those, cleaning and drying really are part of the fix.
