Spiders are not fleeing the cold into your warm house — most of the species you find indoors live indoors year-round, and the spiders on your foundation are built to overwinter outside. What actually happens from late August through October is mating season: mature males abandon their webs and hiding spots and wander, at night, across open floors, looking for females. Add the fact that a summer of feeding has grown every resident spider to its most noticeable size, and you get the annual illusion of an invasion — when what you are really seeing is the house’s existing population at its most mobile and most visible.
This reframing is not pedantry; it changes the plan. You are not defending a wall against an inbound tide, so a moat of repellent spray is solving the wrong problem. You are managing a resident population at exactly the moment it is easiest to find, easiest to catch on the move, and — because females are laying egg sacs for the next generation — the moment when removal counts double for next year. September is not when the spider problem starts. It is when the fix works best.

The wolf spider deserves one reassurance: it is the one that makes people scream — big, hairy, fast — and it is harmless, webless, and actively useful, eating more insects than the other two combined. Step 1: The Vacuum Protocol — Where the Real Population Cut Happens
Nothing else in this guide removes as many spiders per hour as a vacuum with a hose attachment, because nothing else removes egg sacs. Every female house spider produces multiple papery, pea-sized sacs, each holding on the order of a hundred eggs or more. Second, grooming: cockroaches and ants ingest residues when they clean their legs with their mouthparts — that is the delivery mechanism — and spiders do not groom that way.
